How to Convert Ounces to Pounds

To convert an ounce measurement to a pound measurement, use a simple formula. Since one ounce is equal to 1/16 of a pound, the formula for the conversion is:

pounds = ounces ÷ 16

The weight in pounds is equal to the ounces divided by 16.

How to Convert to a Mixed Measurement

Usually a decimal weight measurement is expressed as a measurement in pounds and ounces. For example, 5.75 lb is often expressed as 5 lb 12 oz. Follow these steps to convert ounces to pounds and ounces.

  • Divide the total ounces by 16 to find the pounds in decimal form
    38 oz ÷ 16 = 2.375 lb
  • If the pound measurement does not have a decimal, then you're done!
  • If the pound measurement does have a decimal, then subtract the decimal portion from the pound measurement to get an even pound measurement.
    2.375 - .375 = 2 lb
  • Multiply the even pound measurement by 16 to find how many of the total ounces are divisible by 16.
    2 lb × 16 = 32 oz
  • Subtract the number of ounces in the even pound measurement from the total ounces to find the remainder. This is the ounce measurement.
    38 oz - 32 oz = 6 oz
  • Now, take the even pound measurement and the remainder in ounces. This is the pounds and ounces measurement.
    38 oz = 2 lb 6 oz
  • A far easier way to get a mixed measurement like this is to use long division. The quotient is the whole pounds and the remainder is the ounces.
